I actually have a question. I heard inside an English publication of Asian culture that in Japan there are manga libraries. You pay a set amount of cash and get to stay in the ‘library’ as long as you want reading manga. Have you experienced this type of facility at all yet? Or did the publication mix up an ACTUAL library that just happened to stock manga? It seems a little strange the magazine making such a big fuss out of something that sounded EXACLTY like a library that just happened to stock these books. It seemed like the article was implying it ONLY stocked manga.
Also, is there much demand for manga produced out side of Japan? Like megatokyo for instance?
One more question. Is it true that in Japan it is considered rude to finish every last bite of a meal? I heard it’s because it’s a slur on our hosts generosity, as apposed to England were NOT finishing every bite is a slur on your hosts cooking.

I believe what you're talking about is actually called a manga cafe. While I haven't actually been to one myself, I've heard a decent amount about them from people here. From what I've heard, they're typically combined with internet cafes. You pay so much money to rent a little room/cubicle with a computer and there's also a ton of manga you can read if that's what you came for. They're supposedly quite cheap, as in so cheap that some people will pay for an entire night and sleep in the chair in their little room instead of getting a hotel room.shauni wrote:I actually have a question. Mainstream American comics (Superman, Spiderman, that kinda stuff) seem to have a decent cult following. Haven't seen any foreign manga though. I've never heard anything about that either from people or in my Japanese culture book. And, when I've eaten with people (school lunches, restaurants, camp out BBQ, and once at someone's house) the majority of people ate all their food (although there's occasionally someone who doesn't). to shauni's question about it being rude to finished ur food... maybe u got it mixed up with china. Because if u finish every last bite of a meal in china, it communicates that u were disstisfyed... and they didn't feed u enough... if they have endless supply of food... everytime u finish ur plate.. they will serve another plate.. I had to leave some food on the plate so that they stopped serving me food... ah, i was so full...
btw, it's like that for some other asian countries... so maybe it is possible that some people in japan believe that... lol

Manga is very cheap. Manga magazines like Shonen Jump seem to average a little over $2 and graphic novels (which are basically the same as US manga graphic novels, just with a different type of binding) are something like $3.50. Anime, and DVDs in general, on the other hand is very expensive. A single DVD can easily cost $40-50 with full season/series box sets ranging from about $200-450.

A quick note to answer Kisori's question as well. I was talking specifically about anime DVDs. Newer movies (Japanese and US) and non anime TV show singe DVDs are priced about the same as single anime DVDs. Boxsets of US TV shows are a bit cheaper but still around 2 or 3 times as much as you'd pay in the US. However, you can find a decent selection of old (mostly non US) movies for $4.50 - $9.Gardialvoir wrote:and the DVDs are so expensive because.....?
As for why they cost so much, all I can think of is that the DVD companies here figure "Hey, as long as people are paying that much there's no need for us to lower prices to a more reasonable level."
