Since shinigami are like spirits, the gigai is like a temporary body that they can inhabit, if they wish to blend in with the people of the living world... explaining for anyone who doesn't noe btw )

I get the impression that all gigai except for Rukia's first one were issued by Soul Society. Rukia's first was, as mentioned, a 'rental' from Kisuke. But her second one (the one she used in Baunto arc onward) is probably also issued by Soul Society. And she wasn't staying in the real world 'illegally.' She was assigned there for a month, but then stayed too long and was arrested. And getting her powers taken by Ichigo and forced to use a gigai wasn't part of the plan either.
Anyway, to explain my absence, Kiku spent some time recovering and was sent to the real world just after all the scuffling and banging around and stuff happened. Yume...er...joined the others in her gigai. So...she was present when Kusa and Bael got sent outside. And stuff. I might add she was suppressing her giggles with some difficulty.
Note: Minato is only interested in fighting Yume. The vines are there to prevent the others from interfering and I reakon Yume should focus on the fight instead of the vines at the moment.
Yume isn't focusing on the vines. She just 'told' her birds to help her allies, so they're pretty much on their own right now. She doesn't have anything to do with their actions.
You might want to edit some bits on your last post.
1. I assume you meant "Yume" instead of "Minato" in the second purple section, since it'd be kind of hard for Minato to fire a Cero at himself. Unless he was aiming at his foot or something.
2. You say he got hit and then froze into a block of ice. In reality, he'd have been severely frostbitten on one side of his body, gotten many lacerations everywhere else, and stabbed in the throat. Last time I checked, getting stabbed in the throat would be pretty fatal, so you might want to say he dodged that.
3. I posted that while Yume was going bankai, the entire fighting arena was frozen by that pool of water she made. That would include the vines. So unless the vines broke free from the ice, Minato wouldn't be able to surround himself with them.

2. Hollows have instant regenration as an advance techinique so... that does make sense after saying that... remember how ichigo did it when he went full hollow?
