I put up a new avatar, and it doesn't show up on the forums. Instead it looks like I have no current avatar at all.

No, it's an off-site avatar. I put the link to it in the "Link to off-site avatar" box, and it doesn't show up despite it saying that my profile's been updated.

Assuming that you didn't enter the address wrong, it's quite possible that the site you're getting the avatar from doesn't allow direct image linking. In other words, they might let you save the image to your computer and do whatever to it but they prevent people from pulling the image directly from their site to another since it's essentially stealing their bandwidth and bandwidth isn't free. Pebble Version is actually that way (with the exception of a few sites like the forums and Top Web Comics).
