Rules, Discussion, & OOC

Post by Josiah »

Anyone who has played the Monkey Island games probably knows more or less how this works. It's pirate sword fighting where the winner is determined by how good they are at insults and retorts (used to throw off the opponent), now converted into a forum battle game. This thread is now for rules, discussion, and challenging other people.

New fights must be started in new threads. For a normal battle make a thread called "X vs. Y" where X and Y are the names of the fighters. For a high seas battle make a thread called "X vs. Y on the High Seas".

How to Play: NORMAL BATTLES
1. Fights are 1 on 1 only.
2. At the start of a duel players roll a 6 sided die to determin who goes first.
3. The person with the highest number may choose who goes first. The person who goes first opens the battle with an insult. (NOTE: Insults should not be personal in nature and should ideally be somewhat humorous digs or boastful. Keep in mind that you're a swordfighting pirate.)
4. The person on the receiving end of the insult then counters with a retort. (NOTE: Once again, retorts should be humorous and not personal.)
5. An official judge who is not taking part in the battle will act as the judge and determine if the retort succeedes or fails. (See the list of official judges below. If you would like to be added to the list, PM me.)
6. If the retort is deemed successful, that person gets to hurl the next insult. If the retort fails, the insulting person gets to do another insult.
7. You get 1 point for each succesful retort you make and you also gain 1 point for each retort your opponent fails. The winner of the duel is the first person to 5 points. HOWEVER, if one combatent fails three retorts in a row they instantly lose.
8. When it is your turn to post an insult or retort you have three days to do so. If you fail to post in that time limit you automatically forfeit the match. To be fair, this rule does not apply to players who are out of town (and have informed everyone of that fact). If you are out of town the time limit starts once you return.

Sample Instults and Retorts:

Sample 1:
Guy 1: "You swing your sword like a Dairy Farmer!"
Guy 2: "How appropriate, you fight like a cow!"
Retort is successful.

Sample 2:
Guy 1: "My sword is known all over the Carribean!"
Guy 2: "Yeah but it's too bad no one has ever heard of you!"
Retort successful.

Sample 3:
Guy 1: "I've never been scratched in battle!"
Guy 2: "Yeah, so?"
Retort fails.

How to Play: HIGH SEAS BATTLES
1. All the rules from normal battles apply.
2. You can only fight in a high seas battle if you have defeated The Swordmaster of Melee Island.
3. All retorts must rhyme with the insult they are countering. If a retort does not rhyme it automatically fails.
4. Don't try and make your insults really hard to rhyme with. Ending an insult with a word that nothing rhymes with is not allowed and will result in that insult automatically failling. Banned words include: orange, silver, purple, month, angst, scalp, eighth, ninth, twelfth, breadth, depth, width.

Sample Instults and Retorts:

Sample 1:
Guy 1: "Coming face to face with me must leave you petrified."
Guy 2: "Is that your face? I thought it was your backside!"
Retort is successful.

Sample 2:
Guy 1: "My attacks have left entire islands depopulated!"
Guy 2: "With your breath, I'm sure they all suffocated."
Retort successful.

Sample 3:
Guy 1: "My skills with a sword are highly venerated."
Guy 2: "Too bad they're all made up."
Retort fails.

To start things off, I'd like to challenge Silver to a duel, since we've both played some Monkey Island games and all. Assuming he accepts, we'll use this duel to demonstrate how the game is played.

Please don't start any other fights until after this duel is over and use it as a basis for how to play.

Silver, I figure we can judge ourselves for this one fight, unless you know someone else with enough Monkey Island knowledge to judge for us. Also, I rolled a 4.

Hmm... Looks like I ninja'd you there. Please read my above post. I'd like to hold off on all new battles until the demo battle is finished. Also, when fighting you need to find an opponent to battle and roll a die to determine who gets to insult first.

XDD Sweet!

And, well, Stevenson has significant knowledge of the Monkey Island games. More than I do. The fact that I've ever heard of Monkey Island is kind of his fault.

And I rolled a 3.
"Irregardless" and "Over exaggerated" are NEVER CORRECT EVER because they are redundant
Regardless means "without regard", and adding "ir" on the front actually makes it a double negative; exaggerate means "to overstate" so you're literally saying "over overstate."
Example: I can not exaggerate the importance of this fact enough, regardless of how often people ignore it.

I thought he might. I'll add him to the judge list too.

And I go first...

((Since Silver seems to take forever to respond to any post I make lately, I'll just go ahead and open the game up for everyone now. I'll still fighting Silver, but I don't want to keep other people from playing while we have our fight.))

Cool! I'll fight somebody! And also, I've thought of the perfect retort to your insult. But I'll leave that for Silver to figure out...

((Every post you make? Well that's not exaggerating... [/sarcasm]

And the problem here is... before this I avoided the RP Battles section like the plauge. It's not that I forget so much as a "Gah, I don't feel like going in there... I'll get it later" thing.))

"If you can't beat a drunker monkey what does that make you?"

Or, since one might call me a judge...I reckon that was rather successful.
