Gunnerkrigg Court

Post by Phonox »

This week's comic will be "Gunnerkrigg Court", and there is nothing you can do about it! Mwahahahahaha!

Anyway, Gunnerkrigg Court is a boarding school located somewhere in the UK, seperated from the Gillitie Wood by the Annan Waters. The protagonist of the story is Antimony "Annie" Carver, one of the more level headed students. She is joined by her best friend Katerina 'Kat' Donlan and Reynarome, an evil creature trapped in the body of a stuffed animal. Other characters include Dr. Disaster, Mort, and the lovable boxbot.

You're basically just following Antimony's adventures through school, which can get quite interesting. Anyway, my favotite comics that don't spoil the plot would be this, this, and this. Well, there is more, but I want you to read the comic and get there yourself.
If you smell something burning, it's my heart.

If I said that this webcomic shattered the willing suspension of disbelief, I wouldn't emphasize it enough. I'm on chapter 14 and still trying to figure it out.

I'm sorry, the characters are unbelievable. If the world was just unbelievable, and the characters were responding as normal people of that world, it would be more believable. But Antimony can't be a human as far as I can tell, and as far as I can tell, humans are the dominant species in that part of the school. Though I can't say that I don't like Reynardine.

The whole thing just strikes me as a bit funny, not haha funny, more like bad fanfic funny. Sorry.

It didn't catch me too much at first, but once the story started getting going I really started to like the comic.

The main character bugs me sometimes, but at the same time her character is interesting. It's a bit confusing at times... and a lot confusing at others... but I can understand some stuff.

Well, I like it. Gonna keep reading through the rest of the archive once I get the chance.

Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to go with Poik on this one. The art is good, and the setting has potential (it's not all that unique, but it has potential), but the characters just aren't believable. Dragon attacks, minotaurs living in the basement, strange shadow monsters... You think everyone else would act at least a bit scared or surprised or something... Instead they're just like "meh". It's one of the same problems I had with Key. Unless strange stuff is extremely commonplace in the world, which doesn't seem to be the case, people just don't act that way. And it's hard for me to get into the story when I'm constantly thinking about how the characters aren't acting right.

I'm up to this page. Just saving this here so I don't lose my spot... I plan to read a little more before I judge it. Haven't gotten to 50 pages yet.

But so far, I like it...
"Irregardless" and "Over exaggerated" are NEVER CORRECT EVER because they are redundant
Regardless means "without regard", and adding "ir" on the front actually makes it a double negative; exaggerate means "to overstate" so you're literally saying "over overstate."
Example: I can not exaggerate the importance of this fact enough, regardless of how often people ignore it.

I think the reason Annie doesn't act surprised around supernatural things is because she's been exposed to them all her life. The older people of the Court have been dealing with it for years, so they're not likely to be shocked either. Other than that, if there's anyone else that didn't act appropriately, it hasn't prevented me from enjoying the story.

I can't put my finger on it, but there's something about this comic that I really like. I read through the archives over the weekend. So far it's got my attention. One thing I love about it is the short one line comments the author puts at the bottom of the page, I just find them funny. The comic itself is amusing too, it made me actually laugh out loud a couple times (in the literal sense, not "lol").

So I think I might stick with this one, at least to figure out just what the heck is going on with that "school" and certain residents. :-P

Yeah. you don't learn much about that until chapter 16. After that the story becomes a little more understandable. But, if it weren't for the fact that you suggested it, I would've never gotten that far in this comic. Even if she's seen all these things, the only thing that even partially explains her completely unemotional, always drugged out, attitude (couldn't think of a better discription) is the fact that she
had to escort her own mothers soul.
Ok, read a bit more. I like the art, for one. Weird style, but it works and it's consistant and I like the colors.

Characters are... yeah, they seem kind of unbelievable, but the Minotaur was feaking awesome so I can forgive that. They did react with a bit of shock... outside of Antimony, who just isn't the type to be caught off-guard. So it didn't bother me...

Pacing's an issue, though. It's just one thing after another with very little introduction to the school or characters. The shadow thing seems like it should have been much more important, being the very first plot point, but it was over and now it's gone and we've completely moved on with no reference to that arc whatsoever. It's... kind of confusing.

Overall though, I like the comic... I'll try to finish it later.

The showdow creature does show up again...

Anway I like the style, its different but I definatly like it. It seems like a kind of Hogwarts situation, you know whith the creepy out-of-bounds woods, secret passages with monsters that are really just bug puppy dogs, the houses, and all that lovely othe stuff. Or maybe i'm just looking for similarities.

But apart from that I like it, even if alot of it doesn't make sence.

Taipan, Tigersnake and a Box jellyfish
Stonefish and the poison thing that lives in a shell
That spikes you when you pick it up
