Time to revive this. The new issue is... Where did the whole idea of baby talk come from? Do people think babies are stupid? Does looking at a baby temporarily damage the speaker's brain cells? Or is it part of an insidious plot to spread poor grammar among the next generation?

I think it originated from parents imitating their kids in an attempt to communicate affection.

Or its baby's using mind control, that's right, I saw Baby Geniuses, I know what's going on.

As for poor grammar, you can blame that one chat programs such as MSN and Yahoo, and school. Yeah I had issues with grammar and spelling but nobody ever helped me. I still can't remember which is a noun and an adverb...

I think MSN has the job of destroying grammar. I think that maybe parents try and mimic the funny noises the baby makes? Maybe? I dunno.

People, being stupid, think that knowledge is entirely based on age. By that logic, the younger you are, the dumber you are. It's all because of the belief of superiority lodged deep in your brain, and you are too stupid to realize that you are doing this. That's why all the adults ignore kids, even when they are mentally superior, and bring harm to themselves, asking why did this happen to them, even though the event could have been prevented. Of course, the general population does not help the mentality of adults, seeing as the majority of a modern child's brain is used to remember popular jingles, Hollywood scandals, and who's kissing Sandy.

Therefore, people think that babies, being younger than teenagers, are idiotic and inferior, and talk to them idiotically.

Baby talk is definitely the parents and others thinking that babies cannot understand them anyway, so they'll just make noises they think the baby will like. Of course, this isn't good for language acquisition.

And it isn't MSN that destroys grammar, it's laziness. MSN promotes laziness by being a convenience.

Sure IMing and text messaging promotes bad grammar, but that stuff's all really new. Baby talk is old school anti-grammar.

I've heard that talking to babies in a sing-song voice helps them learn to speak faster. I guess because the sound of it appeals to them, which makes it easier for them to remember.

But I think it might have originated because people thought that babies may not be smart enough to understand normal language, so they keep it simple when talking to them.
