Hi! Commenting on those verses Astral mentioned...
Numbers 31:17
[Moses says:] "Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. But all the young girls who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."
Like I said, taking women as prisoners was common. They could be used as servants (you know, the household chore type) or married, but not raped. And, as I also said, there were lots of rules to ensure that they were well treated whether they were made into servants or wives. Servants were even had several ways they could gain freedom. They could purchase it or they would be freed automatically (provided they wanted to be) after a certain number of years.
Judges 19:22-24
As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, base fellows, beset the house round about, beating on the door; and they said to the old man, the master of the house, "Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may know him." And the man, the master of the house, went out to them and said to them, "No, my brethren, do not act so wickedly; seeing that this man has come into my house, do not do this vile thing. Behold, here are my virgin daughter and his concubine; let me bring them out now. Ravish them and do with them what seems good to you; but against this man do not do so vile a thing."
You're taking this one out of context. Quick summary of the entire story... A man and his concubine (wife with a few less rights, though still well treated) (actually, now that I think about it, I don't believe God ever condoned the taking of concubines, though multiple wives were ok) were traveling and they stayed the night in this one town with an old man and his daughter. The men of the city were evil and did the stuff mentioned in the verses above. The old man's offer was somewhat reasonable considering the time period (females were seen as less important than males by many, though the Bible never endorses that view) and probably saved them all from being killed. Anyway, the villagers accepted and the man's concubine ended up being killed in the process. The man then left and told the other Isrealite cities about what had happened. They were shocked and outraged that such an act had been commited (being both morally wrong and against the laws of God), gathered an army, and pretty much wiped out the men involved.
Remember, I said rape is never condoned in the Bible, not that it never happens in the Bible. There's a big difference. Many things take place in the Bible that go against the laws of God, but said acts are condemed and the perpetraitors are usually punished (either by God or people that follow Him).

Poik also makes a good point about baby steps. While some of the actual laws in the Bible may seem somewhat barbaric by modern standards, they were a huge improvement on the standard practices of the times. You can't expect people to make drastic changes overnight. If God's laws were seen as too radical, the people may have been disinclined to follow them. So He started out with smaller steps which eventually led to further and further improvement. For example, owning slaves is allowed by Biblical laws, but there were so many rules in place to ensure a slave's well being that the whole process of slavery eventually fell out of practice in Isreal because it simply wasn't profitable for the slave owners.

Man, do I miss weird stuff when I'm away. Odd conversation to walk into.

I was in New York Friday and Saturday. Usually, me and my sis go up on Saturday for our classes, but my Dad had a conference and his hotel was a few blocks from FIT, so we all just decided to go. I saw a lot more of New York than I had before, but then again I usually just walk the couple blocks from Madison Square Garden to the school.

So yeah, New York. Weird place. The people outside trying to sell you stuff are very...persistent. I must have seen a hundred charicature stands. One guy selling...I think bags, was fighting with a cop because he wasn't allowed to vend at that street corner.
It took us a good hour to find a place to eat Saturday. The first place we tried sold burgers...and only burgers. The second one was a Kosher restaurant. So my little sister's "Chicken Caesar Wrap" didn't have Caesar dressing, and my brother couldn't get a cheeseburger. Instead of putting out bread, they gave us bowls of pickles. It was good food, though.

But, I really have to say I prefer living in a town environment. I'm just not a city person.

In hockey, Detroit has swept Columbus 4-0. Also, Canada is at the moment kicking Hungary's butt. This fills me with joy.

I like Kosher... especially the bread. Jewish bread for some reason tastes much better than regular bread. Iran can go and shove it.

WoWcraft has been on the fritz ever since patch 3.1 came out... right now I'm using a program thoughtfully provided by Blizzard in the game start-up menu to check and repair all of the files in the game. Hopefully that will make it playable. Fallout 3 keeps freezing and crashing my PS3 as well... why doesn't God seem to want me to play video games?

Hey.

Bruins are doing great, which makes me happy. Red Sox did pretty awesome last night.

...Aaarg...skool tomorrow. Noooooo....vacation went by waaaaaaaaay too fast. It's insane. I don't think it's ever gone quite this fast before. I mean, I can't believe that a few days ago that I was in Virginia, chillin' with my step-cousin.

In more exciting news, I'm going to iD Tech camp for a week in the summer, taking a coure on 3D Role Playing Game Design. Whoo.

Hm, religious debate eh? I don't have much to input except something I heard once, apparently a couple typos got through the King James version, the biggest one being the line "I will be with you even to the end of the world" is supposed to be "I will be with you even to the end of the aeon," or something similar. Now that I think about it, it's kinda funny that I really don't know much about the bible. I spent 5 years in a Roman Catholic elementary school, I have a hardcore Anglican grandma, and I've been baptized twice!

Give me a place in the country any day and I'd be happy. there's something about the minimal traffic, the five minute walks to your neighbors house, and the serious lack of light pollution (I can't stand all of it here!) that makes it amazing.

Hi! I spent a pretty large portion of the day out shopping with my mom (she came down here for a concert, and she and I are driving back to CO after my last final exam Wednesday morning (for my whole week and half long break before semester)). Anyway, the shopping took a lot longer than I thought it would, which is why I'm only just getting on the forums now. It was kinda fun though, and I picked up some good stuff at Bookman's (big used book, movie, music, game, etc store that I've mentioned before). Aside from some manga and a cool/frustrating PSP game, I got a second controller, zapper, and a copy of Super Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt/World Track Meet for that NES I picked up a while back. Of course, I already have Super Mario Brothers on my Wii and as part of Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES, but playing it on a real NES has that whole nostalgia factor for it. I mean really, now that I finally have a NES again, how can I not get SMB?

Saber, hope you enjoy your camp. Though if you ask me, 3D role playing game design seems like a ridiculously complex topic to try and cover in a week... I mean, there's the design itself, the programming, the art, the writing, and more. And each of those parts could take years to really learn...

Heck yes! SMB on the NES is sooo much fun! I know where a buncha secrets are.

The 1-ups hate me in that game, though. Half the time, some of them are all "gar, I be the not there!", then my cousin gets to that level (in 2 player mode) and they're all "hahaha, they're right there!" and I'm like "meanie!"

Yeaaah...not sure how they can fit that in one week either, but my cousin did a different course at this camp last year (and the year before) and loved it. He made a neat game, as did two of his friends, but I forget the URL to the freewebs they were posted on. Eh. His friend's one was sooo glitched up, it was hilarious, but I managed to beat it by flying off the screen and making it to the end. :P

And....we lost our softball game yesterday, but I played good as catcher, so eh. Today's another game, as is tomorrow. Whoo.

Hey, another puppy is sick, this time it's a yellow puppy I named Hero. He's doing better than the puppy who died and moving around and eating.he had a lot of ticks on him so it's probably tick fever. His Grandma, Bit had it a few times and survived, while his mom Banshee never had tick fever.
Also in puppy news, Cinnamon's had her litter a couple of weeks ago, Don't know how many yet, or what they look like, but my house will soon reach a spike in mutts and that makes me happy.

Hey.

Sorry to hear that, Aura. Hope things turn out okay!

Softball game got cancelled today. No idea why. I was upset, but on the plus side it was extremly hot today and I was glad not to play in this insane weather. It was 93 degrees F today. 93 degrees! That's insane for here! Heck, it rarely gets that hot in the SUMMER! It's APRIL! Gah!

Heso!

A religious discussion huh. Well my views are similar to Astral's, except for the moon being made of cheese in another dimension. Considering cheese is pretty much fermented milk one would wonder how a large amount of it came to be circling the earth. Maybe there's a large cow in that universe that knows how to make cheese, either that or its made of a cheese like substance...

And apparently when I Google 'Signature Site' It comes up with a link to the saying hi to Josiah thread. That's weird.

And Kaida now has Mario Kart Wii, it is much fun. ^_^

Stonefish and the poison thing that lives in a shell

Hey Josiah, I forgot to mention this. About your Ink post on Monday. What if you made it a DS game? That way, you could use the stylus to write words or symbols that would activate spells and events.

Congrats on getting Mario Kart Wii, Kaida. Man, I really should get a wii. They sound so fun.

Hi! I'm driving back to CO tomorrow right after my Japanese test so if I get on the forums at all, it won't be till rather late in the day.

Sira... While being able to write words in Ink with the stylus would be kinda cool at first...I'm pretty sure that people would get tired of it pretty quickly. I think that type of aspect works better with single letters, short words, or magic symbols. And the writing in Ink is gonna be a bit different...but I'll get to that in a future post.

Hey.

Writing with the stylus...reminds me of Lost Magic. In that game, you fight by drawing magic runes. You can string two runes together to make a combo, with the second rune decidign the element. For example, lvl 1 fire (which basicall looks like ^ ) shoots a fire ball. Lvl one fire followed by level one ice (which basically looks like S) shoots a blast of ice that goes through enemies, so it can hit multiple in a row. The real challenge is figuring out awesome combos.

Leemme tell you, though, drawing the Lost Magics (lvl 3 magic of each element) is no easy feat. The light one is the easiest (5 pointed star). The rest are too hard to describe. I guess the dark magic one kinda looks like a 3 leaf clover. Bleh.

Off to skool. Fun game, Lost Magic.
