Strange Candy

Post by auragongal »

Strange Candy is about a group of people in Japan who got warped to another dimension at Tokyo Tower. They now go through many genres of fiction trying to get home. A little adult in a few comics. But it's great!
http://www.strangecandy.net/d/20010116.html

The characters are:
Eri: an anime Fangirl from the states whose in Japan as an exchange student
Keiko: Eri's host in Japan whose in college. She's like a sister to Eri.
Petra:My favorite Character, she's a weapon collector with acess to Hammerspace
Hoshiko: a girl with lots of lists.
Eeichi: A rocker with a dirty mind.
Lycidia: a wealthy teen who wants to rule the world.
Daisuke:Caused the dimensional warp is now Lycidia's minion
Kerisu: The Bad guy...
Dom: a poor minion stuck folowing the heroes.

This is my all time favorite!
This is my RP Forum, Tales of Symphonia Adventures, or ToSA for short. Please take a look?

I haven't read far in it yet, but... well, it's not bad, really. The art's pretty good, the characters are fun... it's just that it's... all sterotypes and cliches. It's like the authors go out of their way to play into every anime Trope ever. And they lampshade it in an attempt to make it funny, but it... really... isn't. Of course, I haven't read far enough to really judge it yet - they could make something of the plot with time; who knows? So far it doesn't look like it, but... well, I inted to keep reading, anyway. It is manga, and I do love the manga. But more than that... I'm sticking around for Dom.

It's a trap!
"Irregardless" and "Over exaggerated" are NEVER CORRECT EVER because they are redundant
Regardless means "without regard", and adding "ir" on the front actually makes it a double negative; exaggerate means "to overstate" so you're literally saying "over overstate."
Example: I can not exaggerate the importance of this fact enough, regardless of how often people ignore it.

I've never seen a webcomic that could be more appropriately paired with Freud Was Right. Also, I just got stuck in a Tetris Effect again to give you that. Also... I dislike Freud for the record. Well, not so much to how everything is symbolic, but more about his theory that all humans think mainly about sex, 24/7, even when they aren't.
Anyway. This comic reminds me of my friend in school who accused the library of keeping porn referring to their recent addition of a manga section.
... And yet, I think I'll read the rest of it because it's not horribly objectionable. And I'm confused as to why Shirt Guy Dom is there.
Hmm... This signature just got really short...

Shauni actually got me started on this one a long time ago. I'm still reading it today. Like Silver said, it's hitting pretty much every anime cliche there is, but there's some pretty funny parts (the Yu-Gi-Oh style card battle bits are pretty good). I do think it goes overboard on all the innuendo and sex stuff, but not so much that it makes me stop reading.

I think Shirt Guy Dom is homage to Shirt Guy Tom (or vice-versa) for Sluggy Freelance. He used to be in charge of designing or distributing the shirts or something. On the note of Sluggy, Petra reminds me a lot of Oasis, due to similar appearance and trigger-happy personality. The clothes are probably a coincidence, as this attire appeared in 2006.

Sorry, all things Sluggy aside, Strange Candy is an entertaining comic. Albeit too mature for my taste. But that’s just me, as I tend to be a little squeamish about those things. I was a little disturbed on more than one account, no offense Aura.

And I agree that there are many clichés that, while funny, sometimes made the plot a little irritating, or they just went over my head (I had to look up a few terms…okay a lot). Though the abundance of them leaves lots of room for the characters to poke fun. Heh, anti-sparkle patch :-P

I found the use of hammerspace funny throughout the strip, hence I felt inclined to note that I liked Lycidia's reaction in this strip.

Overall, it’s a good comic, one which I might continue reading.

I know Shirt Guy Dom, stick figures included, is affiliated with MegaTokyo, which made me be confused by the UberTokyo setting.

It's definately the MegaTokyo Dom, seeing as his friend/enemy Ed is there as well. Maybe the author is friends with him in real life, or is just a big MegaTokyo fan.

I did a little digging around, 'cause I was curious as to which one was first. I found this article about Shirt Guy Dom on Wikitokyo, but I don't know if its a reliable source.

It says when Dom explained the origin of Shirt Guy Dom, he included "We haven't been sued by Sluggy Freelance yet, so I'd consider it a success."

Here's a link to it. Sorry if I'm making a bigger deal out of this than need be.

I'm not trying to undermine Strange Candy or Wikitokyo. I hope it didn't sound that way.

So far I've liked what I read. As aformentioned, it does play on cliches, but I think that's the whole idea of the thing.

The art's not bad, but sometimes there's too many different people talking in panels and I kinda can't tell what's exactly happening. Otherwise, no real complaints.
