Rune had meanwhile restrained the girl, taking her to the Shinigami elders. He left her in their care and then went to the infirmary to check on Rai. Only... Rai wasn't there. The fukutaichou sighed, holding his head. "Damn it..."
~~~
"Oh...", Kaoru heard Rath come back into consciousness. He walked over to the young boy and kneeled down beside him. "Well, Rath... They're both gone. We don't know where they ran off to... I'm sorry." Even though he was still worried about both of them, he managed to keep from seeming upset.
Rather than doing what Kusa thought she would, she decided to "go ahead" and enter the living world.
Rai was watching from nearby, "Now's my chance to escape!" he said... running through the "gate" Yuki had opened.
"Hey, wait for me!" she said, running through as well.
(Well... I hope we can somehow revive this...)
Rune exited the infirmary, returning to the area where he had left the other remaining shinigami (Kaoru, Rath, Kiku, and Yume). He was wearing a highly agitated expression but he managed to keep a somewhat restrained tone. "Well... Even after all we went through to protect him, Rai has disappeared from the infirmary. We've lost our charge and now have two rogue shinigami on the loose (Bael and Kusa). On top of that, I see that Yuki has disappeared as well. Our current situation is, obviously, pretty bad...", he finished with a sigh.
Kaoru gently held Rath in his arms and stood up with him as Rune returned to their small group. Concern for Bael and Kusa was still lurking in his mind though he kept a tight lid on it. After all, worrying wasn't going to do anyone any good. He listened to all of Rune's speech, which left him wanting to know what their next course of action was. But Rune seemed at a loss on that subject. It could have been worse. At least he wasn't ordering the immediate man hunt for the "two rogue shinigami." Kaoru knew he would be entirely useless during such a mission.
Marley was lying in the park listening to Naruto openings, when he saw the door to the Shinigami world open. He then saw Yuki step out and Rai run out shortly after. "HAY GUYS! Was it fun in there without me? You have to tell me all about it! I assume there was a big fight?" Marley said as he saw the various scratches and little number signs that form somehow when you get in fights. "Where's everyone else?"
Bael summoned a portal to the human world, and took a deep breath, letting it out before stepping through, in a different location than Yuki and the others. He looked around, waiting for Kusa.
Rath wiggled free of Kaoru's grasp and ran over to Rune, hugging his leg, sniffing softly. "I wish today never happened..." He said softly.
Kusa followed the older shinigami through the new portal. He came out on the other side, but it was at that moment that his strength gave out on him. Instead of gracifully landing on his feet, he fell forward, colliding with Bael once again. His naginata slipped from his grasp and clattered on the ground beside them.
~~~~~
Rune's annoyed and agitated mood began to disappear as he felt his younger brother hugging his leg and sniffling softly. He patted Rath's head gently and knelt down beside him. A smile finally broke out on his lips as he hugged the tiny shinigami. "Hey, hey... Now, I know things are bad, but... Don't cry, Rath. We'll think of some way to resolve all these problems."
Kaoru let Rath go without any resistance, watching him run over to comfort Rune. The sight of the two brothers made him sad. Kusa, his own little brother, was in a whole mess of trouble and his life was in danger. Though the shinigami trusted Bael with him, he just couldn't shake the feeling that their deaths would certainly be inevitable... Kaoru turned a sad gaze to the ground, and knew that there was no one to comfort him.

Yume wordlessly returned her zanpakutou to its sealed form, sheathed it, and crossed her arms, gazing thoughtfully at the sky...ceiling...whatever was above her head at that moment. She didn't much like the thought of having to someday confront either Kusa or Bael, as both were more than formidable. For goodness sake, Bael withstood a point-blank Gran Rey Cero, which was no small feat. She sighed, tapping one foot absentmindedly. Her thoughts turned to the Quincy. Their mysterious opponents had been constantly going after him, and now that he was missing too, it'd be harder to protect him and/or keep him under watch. What on earth were they to do now? Caught up in her musings, Yume was rather oblivious to the emotional state of anyone around her.
Kiku, however, was not. She'd noticed Kaoru's despondent mood when he looked away from Rune and Rath. She glanced around and realized no one was paying attention to her. Quietly, trying not to attract any eyes, she shuffled toward Kusa's older brother and reached out tentatively, the other hand nervously clutching the strap of her medical bag. Touching Kaoru on the shoulder, she asked, "Are you alright, Miyazaki-san?"
(Looking over the character list thread, I only just realized Kiku is older than both Kaoru and Kusa. oO' She sure doesn't act it.)

Kusa gasped as he was shoved onto the ground. "Damn it...", he groaned, looking up at Bael. "Cut me a little slack here. I'm still injured. Besides, you have no right to complain. You were the one who stepped in and saved me so now I'm your problem." After a few moments, he managed to grab his naginata and stand up with it as his support. "Look, I'll try not to slow us down too much... But if worse comes to worse, you can always abandon me and save yourself."
~~~~~
Kaoru slowly looked up as Kiku placed a hand on his shoulder, inquiring if he was all right. He forced a small smile. "Oh... Um... Yes, I think I'm all right, Kiku-san. It's just a bit of stress."
"Listen up! Since it would be incredibly dangerous to go after the mavericks, we will instead go to the mortal realm to try and relocate the Quincy. If he insists on not returning to the Soul Society, then we'll leave a shinigami to watch over him at all times. Now, let's get going...", Rune commanded, apparently having regained his composure.
"Wait... Sir, I'd like to go and search for Kusa and Bael.", Kaoru said abruptly.
Rune looked at him. "Kaoru, what's gotten into you...?"
"Please... Allow me to go into the mortal realm and look for them.", Kaoru insisted.
"Fine. You may go and search for them. If you do locate them, do not allow yourself to be discovered. Don't confront them or make contact with them at all. Do not get yourself killed! Understand?"
Kaoru closed his eyes and bowed. "Understood, sir."
Rune nodded, opening a portal to the mortal realm. He was the first to go through.
Bael stopped, and got a thinking pose for a bit. "You know, that may be a good idea. THen I wouldn't hear the constant sound of you whining." He said.
Rath had decided to stay back for this one.
Kusa turned a very blank expression to his companion. His eyes were dark with a hint of utter sadness submerged in their depths. After a moment, he closed them and sighed. "We should get moving. Now.", he said calmly.
~~~~~
Rune emerged from the gate and waited for Yume, Kiku, and Kaoru to follow through.
Once Kaoru was on the other side, he turned to the others and bowed. "I will be sure to contact you and return once I've located the mavericks. Farewell." With that said, he left them. As he ventured into the city, he began looking for Bael and Kusa by searching for red spirit ribbons.
The fukutaichou looked to the two girls with him. "Well now, where shall we start looking for our little Quincy? Perhaps check for him at his school?", Rune inquired.

Kiku waited for everyone else to go through the gate first. When she realized Yume was still thinking, she ran over and poked the older Shinigami on the shoulder. "Excuse me..."
Yume blinked, glanced at Kiku, and smiled sheepishly. "Sorry about that," she apologized, quickly stepping through the gate. Kiku followed after, just in time to see Kaoru's departure and to hear Rune's question.
"I think that would be a good idea," she piped up. "He might want to be back with people he knows well, to feel safer...or something." Suddenly losing her nerve, she ducked behind Yume and sort of hid there. She looked rather amused.
"Well if that were the case, it'd narrow our choices down to either his school or his home," she observed. "As the school's closer, and since I have no idea where he lives, we might as well check there first. Not that I'm saying you should, Fukutaichou," she added. "Just my opinion."

Rune nodded, heading for Rai's school and hoping that they would find him there or at least somewhere near there. If not, then they would have to search for him by looking for spirit ribbons. That thought wasn't appealing.

“Hold it right there!”
Kusa stopped running, and quickly looked up towards the origin of the voice. His eyes widened as he saw his older brother standing atop a ledge on the roof of a nearby building. “K... Kaoru...”, it was barely above a whisper.
Kaoru jumped from the ledge and landed swiftly in front of the two rogue Soul Reapers. His right hand quickly drew the closed fan from his obi and let it fall open in one smooth movement. As he turned his gaze onto them, his expression was one of pained determination.
“Kaoru, what the hell are you doing here!? Why did you come after us?”, the younger brother burst out, anger ringing through his voice.
The older brother ignored his sibling's questions, instead turning his gaze specifically onto Bael. “Forgive me for this, but I won't allow you to interfere. You'll be sitting on the sidelines this time... Bael...”, he said quietly. He then raised his free hand and held it palm out at Bael. “Binding Spell 99! Kin-restrict!”
A strong force knocked the larger soul reaper back, and immensely strong bindings locked both of his arms behind his back.
As he lowered his free hand, Kaoru turned back to Kusa. “Why did I come?”, he repeated his sibling's words. “Because I intend to kill you. Kusa, you're my brother... and I can't stand to see what you've become. So it is only fitting that I be the one to end it.” On the inside, the older brother was being torn apart and he could not stop a single tear that slid down his cheek.
“Kaoru, stop. I didn't think you were this much of a fool. Even though I'm injured, there is still no way that you could ever hope to beat me. The moment you try the hollow inside of me will break out and kill you instead. Besides...”, Kusa's voice faltered. “You're dishonoring the shinigami code.”
“We should not shed tears.”
“That is a surrender of the body to the heart.”
“It is only proof...”
“That we are beings that do not know...”
“What to do with our hearts.”
With the last verse spoken into the wind, dark clouds began gathering in the sky and soon began to pour rain down on the trio. Kusa gripped his naginata tightly and closed his eyes. “Well... I am glad that someone has the courage to step up and attempt to kill me... and I'm glad that it's you, Kaoru. Maybe I'd regret killing you but then again I really don't know...” There was a sudden spike in his spiritual pressure, signaling the vizard's appearance. The hollow mask formed over Kusa's face and in turn, he unsealed his scythe. His voice changed slightly as something else's overlapped it. “Let's end this now.”
“As you wish. But... you should know. I've been keeping a secret of my own.” Kaoru closed his eyes, holding his fan out to the side. “The truth is... I have the requirements to be a captain. But... Kusa, you were far more suited to be in that kind of leadership position. So I stayed where I was, down on the lower rungs of the ladder. It's just such a shame that I must now use this to end your life...”, his voice faltered slightly. “... Bankai.” Kaoru's spiritual pressure soared into new heights. The fan escaped from his hand, disassembling itself. Each blade separated from it's companions and enlarged itself until it resembled the blade of a large sword, without the guard and hilt attached to it. Then the blades were bathed in a thick layer of searing light, which encased them entirely. The elder brother stood in the center of the newly revealed blades. He slowly opened his eyes, staring straight at his sibling.
Kusa looked at the blades, wincing slightly from the light surrounding them. “Care to explain your Bankai to me, brother? Afraid I don't comprehend it.”
Kaoru shook his head softly, and then mentally commanded two of the shining blades to attack. The twin blades flew from the space around their master and sped towards the vizard.
In turn, Kusa quickly brought up his scythe to fend them off. But he soon found out that his weapon would be completely useless in defending himself. Both blades seemed to pierce straight through the length of the scythe, without actually damaging the weapon itself. They did however inflict injuries on Kusa as they impaled his shoulder and side. He staggered for a moment, blood leaking from the corner of his lips. “How the... hell... is that possible? Your blades went through my scythe like it wasn't even there...”, he said, coughing.
“The blades are coated with my spirit energy. That means they can bypass any other soul reaper's weapon and go straight for the opponent. It's even more effective against hollows because I can manipulate the size of the blades. Feel for yourself.”
The blade in Kusa's shoulder slowly began widening, cutting through more flesh until it broke through the surface. Blood spattered the wet pavement, melding with the rain water. Dark eyes fell closed as Kusa started laughing. “Well... I certainly wasn't expecting that. But I must say it's quiet impressive, especially for you, brother. However, this won't be enough to defeat me. You'll be the one to die here.” He then grabbed the blades and pulled them from his body, tossing them aside. Bringing his scythe up, he made a mad dash at his sibling, dodging all the blades that tried to attack him. Though a few managed to slice him while passing. His tactic worked as he managed to get a hold of Kaoru, wrapping an arm around his neck from behind and placing his scythe at his side.
Kaoru was stunned, unable to even bring himself to struggle against his brother.
“Good bye, Kaoru.” Kusa brought his scythe closer to his sibling's side and slid the blade across it, cutting both clothe and skin. He then jumped back before the miniature explosion occurred, taking out a large portion of Kaoru's right side.
As he hit the ground, his body bleeding profusely, Kaoru's blades came together and reformed his original fan, which fell beside his almost motionless form. It was a sign that he was close to death. He coughed, more blood falling into the rain water. “I'm so sorry... Kusa... I couldn't even fulfill your death wish. I'm sorry...”, he said.
Kusa reached up and tore off the fukutaichou badge on his arm, tossing it at his brother. He then looked at Bael. “Once his kido wears off and you're freed, I'd advise you not to come after me. If you get him to Rune-fukutaichou and Kiku-san fast enough, they may be able to save his life.” With that said, he dashed away from them and disappeared.
Using what little strength was left in his critically wounded body, Kaoru moved his hand to grasp the badge Kusa had thrown to him. He held it close before loosing consciousness. This rendered the kido he'd placed on Bael inactive and thus he was released.
(Woo... That was a doozy of a post.)

If you haven't guessed as much, I used to be Artemis around these parts.
