I heard on the news that some state governer is insisting on calling the Christmas tree at his state's capital building a holiday tree. Aside from the fact that I dislike political correctness in general, this is stupid on another level. Namely that Christmas is the only winter holiday that traditionally involves decorating a tree. Chanukah has a menorah (lamp stand), not a tree. Kwanzaa doesn't have a tree (and, going off of national polls, isn't all that widely observed anyway). And Ramadan not only doesn't have a tree, it's not even a winter holiday (it takes place sometime in the July - September period, which makes the Hanaramakwanzmass mashup word rather ridiculous). So why a holiday tree? Should I have a holiday menorah?

Hi! I've never had or been a tutor so I'm afraid I can't help there.

Heya! You mean Christmahanukkwanzafestivus? That's always a fun season.
Anyway, December means tree lots for the Scouts. Four four-hour shifts spread from the day after Thanksgiving to the Sunday before Christmas (though we extend right to the 24th if necessary). Always fun, but it's a little sad knowing it's my last year with the troop.

Moi,
I, as well, think all of this political correctness people seem to want to have is pretty silly. I, for one, celebrate Christmas more for the tradition then the religious aspects of it. I like to think that the holiday season is a time to give and care for your fellow creatures in your own domain/kingdom/phylum/class/order/family/genus/species.
Hmm...now that I think about it, it might be getting towards that time when my parents and I join forces to conquer the biggest obstacle of them all during the holidays. The yearly baking of the cookies! Every year, my family bakes a whole bunch of cookies together. It takes about three to four days to finish making them all. Last year, we made over 100 cookies. I'm hoping to pass that record this year! Usually, my mom makes the dough, her and I cut ut the cookies, my dad bakes them and makes sure they come out in one piece, and him and I decorate them. It should be quite the experience this year, as it has in years past.
Anyways, nothing much else to say. School has been keeping me quite busy, but other then that, not much. Stay rad people!

Hey.
HEY SO OUR STORY GOT BIGGER NEWS WE'RE ON THE YAHOO FRONT PAGE NOW! How LOVELY is that!? SO LOVELY!
One of the kids who got expelled is (er, was) in my BC Calc class... he was a total jerk, it's so unfair how smart he is. His brains should have been given to someone who is LESS of a jerk. He's common-sense stupid, regardless. Anywho... whole thing is just such a total mess, it's all awful. Those people were so freaking stupid, and they make all of us look so freaking stupid (as I apply to colleges, no less!) and everyone freaking hates us. Huzzah.
On another note, I had my MIT interview today, and I think it went really well :D So, at least that's something going on that's good right now :/
Edit: Aaaaaaand the teachers just voted work to rule, beginning in January. And the school system just died. Nothing is going to get done.
So. Glad. I'm. Leaving.
Double edit: My town is a mess.

Re: Return of the Revenge of the Son of Saying Hi to Josiah!
Hi! This is the second day in a row my car was iced over when I woke up. Now I don't especially mind the cold (I've lived in plenty of cold places), but it just doesn't seem right for it to get that cold in Florida. Everything North of Orlando just feels like a different state...
Re: Return of the Revenge of the Son of Saying Hi to Josiah!
Your car is getting iced over? In Florida? That's so odd, especially because up here in New England it's been pretty warm. I've only recently begun wearing my winter coat.
Sorry to hear about your school situation, Saber. I had a little bit of a scare when I saw on the news a headline that had to do with a high school hazing that resulted in death. But then I figured out it wasn't your high school. Still bad, though.
Besides that little tidbit, though, I have pretty much no info on what's going on in the outside world right now. Being here is kinda like being in a void or something. We don't get any news. Not always a bad thing, no upsetting stories popping up or anything. I only saw the hazing one because someone turned one of the tv's in the gym to a news channel.

Re: Return of the Revenge of the Son of Saying Hi to Josiah!
Hey.
Ooh, didn't mean to scare anyone. No deaths in my school's hazing, just disgustingness. That the news crews still won't leave alone. Yup. As of yesterday, we still had news trucks hovering around just off campus, waiting for the school day to end so they can pounce.
We had an unexpected fire drill (apparently, the popcorn machine had a special moment), so we all had to evacuate the building. Everyone was sarcastically joking that the next headline on the news was going to be "HIGH SCHOOL EVACUATED--SUSPECTED TO BE ANOTHER CASE OF RITUALISTIC HAZING--MORE DETAILS TO FOLLOW" and they'd get about a hundred more of "SO AND SO WAS CALLED, BUT DID NOT RESPOND. SO AND SO REFUSED TO COMMENT. WE WENT TO SO AND SO'S DOOR, BUT THEY DIDN'T ANSWER" becuase there are seriously at least 20 of those in each article on the hazing incident. Anywho, got to admit, mildly surprised that the news crews didn't attack.
And the stupid news is making everything so much worse. People keep saying the STUPIDEST things to the news people, and we just look more and more idiotic. Ayeeee of all the things that could happen to this town, I did not suspect being on national news for hazing would be one of them :/ I've been on three sports teams (well.... counting marching band, that is) and have never been hazed... people are stupid.

Re: Return of the Revenge of the Son of Saying Hi to Josiah!
It's okay Saber. I haven't heard of any hazing around where I live per se, but there have been cases of sexual misconduct. And in my own school we had this period of time where every two weeks we'd have to evacuate due to a bomb threat (there was never any real danger, but they have to play it safe no matter what the odds). Schools always got drama going on. Maybe they haven't had any news stories in a while and are jumping at the chance to get one. And yeah, it does suck that the people who manage to talk to the reporters usually say not the best things.
Hopefully the attention will die down as time goes on. I mean, there's got to be "bigger and better" scandals out there.

Re: Return of the Revenge of the Son of Saying Hi to Josiah!
Hey.
Oh, we had a bomb threat a couple weeks ago, actually... there's usually one or two a semester. Means evacuating the building every time, even in the dead of winter... it's a real party. Ragh. And with the teachers voting Work to Rule (it means they don't have to do anything outside of their contract... so, no after school help, no college reccomendations, no taking tests home to grade, no chaperoning school dances, etc.) because the freaking school board won't give them new contracts (it's been a year and a half....), things are about to get even more fun at school. Whee. Luckily, it doesn't go into place until Jan 3rd, and maybe it'll be resolved by then, but I doubt it. Lovely.
So, back to working on college applications for me!

Re: Return of the Revenge of the Son of Saying Hi to Josiah!
Hi! Got together with some people last night to play Smash Brothers for the first time in ages. A few dumb moves aside, I did pretty good (ended up in the top two in nearly every match) and had fun. But now, despite it being a Sunday, I'd got a rather long to-do list today. I am going to take some time to see The Muppets though. I probably shouldn't, but if I don't go today I don't know when I'll get a chance to. At very least not for a matinee.
Are high school bomb threats really that common? If that's the case, I wonder why they hardly after happen in colleges. I'd like to assume that the students as a whole are more mature but it's more likely due to the fact that, as long as you're not too worried about your grade, you can skip college classes whenever you want without a penalty...

Re: Return of the Revenge of the Son of Saying Hi to Josiah!
Moi,
Gosh, hearing about all of these different highschool, news-worthy, things going on, It makes me realize how boring my highschool is. In my area, out school is known a being that boring, goody-two-shoes school and everyone who goes there is snooty or very quiet, and has excellent grades (not true at all). I do suppose that, at a time like this, being a boring school is just fine with me.
Actually, the only big things I can think of that have happened in the past few years in my school district were these:
Two or three years ago, the elementary school had to go under lock-down because they thought some people with guns were walking around. It actually was just a few highschool and collage guys having a watergun battle.
And then, two years ago (when I was still in the middle school), while I was away with all of the 8th grade German classes in my school on a trip to Vermont, there was a little...gas leak in the highschool. It was in one of the biology lab rooms where, apparently, a bunch of the gas nozzles were left on for quite a while. The school was evacuated for an hour or two. Most of my Junior and Senior friends say that it was quite an...interesting experience.
Yeah...that's all I've got to say for now. Stay rad people!

Re: Return of the Revenge of the Son of Saying Hi to Josiah!
Hey! Haven't been on as often as I used to.
About the extent of my school's exposure to national headlines is found in our show choir (you might have heard of The Headliners?) because they were one of three choices for people to elect as the USA's top show choir. We lost to a show choir from New Jersey (I think), but it was probably because our performance was recorded at a competition, and theirs was performed specifically for recording. It's quite clear that they're well-funded (and they had quite a bit of support from their home state). On the other hand, The Headliners are still one of the greatest show choirs in the nation (and my brother was in the performance that put us in the contest), so check them out on YouTube! I'd provide links, but school computers.

Hi! I was homeschooled until college so I can't really contribute much more to that topic.
The Muppets was funny though. It was corny but they knew that and had fun with it (lots of 4th wall jokes and the like). It was also surprisingly serious at times at had a lot of celebrity cameos.

Hello Everyone.
I guess I've been disappearing on and off. But when I did appear, it turns out Week of Randomness is coming back? Woohoo
I'm hoping to be more active on the forum again, I feel guilty for constantly forgetting to check when the comics are updating. Heheheh...
Oh, gotta say something before I go. Uhh... I've been watching Doctor Who, and it's one of my favorite things to watch now. Just finished up Season Two while using Netflix on the PS3. Still gotta catch up, because the PS3 won't be in my possession for much longer. And I prefer the TV quality over computer screen quality any day. With that, I'll see ya later. (it feels like this is the only thread I talk in lately... oops.)

Heso! I just went to see the Muppets, too. Yes, the fourth wall jokes were fantastic. "Kermit, it'll take us a while to find everyone else. Why don't we just use a montage?" While it was definitely cheesy, they treated it more like a parody most of the time. Meaning that kids wouldn't get hardly any pf the jokes in it... And celebrity cameos! Freaking Niel Patrick Harris is everywhere! He's freaking everywhere I tell you!
Also, Puyon, don't worry about it. I already know that I'm never going to see my PS3 ever again. And I just got Heavy Rain, too ;_; But... it's for Doctor Who...

"Irregardless" and "Over exaggerated" are NEVER CORRECT EVER because they are redundant
Regardless means "without regard", and adding "ir" on the front actually makes it a double negative; exaggerate means "to overstate" so you're literally saying "over overstate."
Example: I can not exaggerate the importance of this fact enough, regardless of how often people ignore it.
