Stuff I've Watched Recently
Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
Why is it that the anime I expected to be crap ends up being the one I am entertained by the most this season.
Upotte! It's, moe and educational at the same time. Know nothing about guns? Learn things from the anime. Have great gun knowledge? Enjoy all the jokes about the guns.

Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
I'm still watching Doctor Who. Just watched the episode with the entire cave of weeping angels. Which begs the question of why they didn't all freeze each other up like the ones a couple seasons ago did. I also watched My Little Pony, since they put it on Netflix. My verdict? Not bad by any means. I watched the first season I will likely watch more once Netflix gets it but the show seemed a bit overrated to me. I mean, there's other decent kids cartoons out there, many of which I think are better (Adventure Time, the Total Drama series, Invader Zim, etc.).
On the anime front, I finished watching everything Full Metal Panic and plan to finally watch The Dissapearance of Haruhi Suzumiya before break.

Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
They know better than to look at each other - and besides that, if it's only one looking at another, as soon as the first one moves the other is free. During their first appearance, they were tricked into looking at each other at the same time, meaning they were stone and they couldn't look away. It was only by accident that that happened, on account of the TARDIS vanishing.
Coincidentally, that episode's ending seems much less happier when you realize:
1. Once that lightbulb goes out, they'll no longer be able to see each other and would be free to move around.
2. Sally had pictures of the Angels. Anything that takes the image of an Angel...
I'll also agree that the Pony hype has gotten... quite out of hand. I mean, at the start it was just that some guys on /co/ decided to give it a chance; the obvious stance for a comic book and action cartoon fan to take when a My Little Pony show is announced is that it'll be complete crap and not even worth watching. But when they heard that Lauren Faust, who worked on Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, was pretty much in charge of the whole project, they decided that it could be better than it sounds. And it was - the thing about MLP is that you can't really put it next to Invader Zim, Adventure Time, or Total Drama Anything. It's a totally different genre with a totally different Target Audience. It's hard to call them kids shows - the target audience is more in the 9-15 range than than the 4-9 range. Ponies targets 4-9s first and foremost. And girls, at that. It's more accurate to compare it to Strawberry Shortcake or Care Bears. And while they might be great for their intended audience, it's hard for anyone else to sit through a single episode. This is where MLP is different - anyone can watch it. And when you consider that Hasbro's biggest goal was just to sell Pony toys to little girls, that every episode is like a 23 minute commercial? This show is freaking godly.
So when those guys on /co/ found that it was not only bearable but pretty enjoyable, everyone rushed to check it out. And maybe it's because they thought they were being all Hipster by getting into something outside their usual taste? Maybe it's because it was cool to like Ponies? Maybe it let grown men embrace their feminine side in a socially acceptable (at least to /co/) way? But it's definitely gotten to be a little scary at this point... I thought it was fun at first, mostly because the pony community was all about love and tolerance and friendship, which was a refreshing change from the rest of the Internet. But now it's become an obsession and even a fetish to some people... It's not just that people are willing to admit that they enjoy watching a show for 6-year-old-girls anymore. It's gone a bit too far...
That said, I totally plan to buy the Glow-in-the-dark Zecora when it comes out. She glows in the dark! How cool is that?!

"Irregardless" and "Over exaggerated" are NEVER CORRECT EVER because they are redundant
Regardless means "without regard", and adding "ir" on the front actually makes it a double negative; exaggerate means "to overstate" so you're literally saying "over overstate."
Example: I can not exaggerate the importance of this fact enough, regardless of how often people ignore it.

Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
I agree that it's shockingly good considering the target audience but yeah, things have gone a bit too far. From all the hype you'd think it was the greatest cartoon ever.

Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
Ha, did not expect to log in to these forums and see anyone discussing MLP. I should probably not talk about it... For your own safety, really.
But aside from that, I've also started watching Doctor Who, me and the gf just started season 2 (Tennant). We actually really liked Eccleston, he had a very honest smile and had one of the best episodes of any show I've ever seen (Episodes 9 and 10, The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances)
As for movies, only seen about 3 lately. Hunger games I enjoyed except for the constant shaky cam, Cabin in the Woods was just simply amazing (For all the wrong reasons, this coming from a guy who's favorite movie is Evil Dead 2), and Avengers (Yeah... not going to lie, it was good.)

Look at this signature. Isn't it the funniest and most hilarious signature you've ever seen?

Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
So, what ends up being my anime of the season? "Haiyore! Nyarlko-san" tops other shows this time. A harem anime where the characters are deities from the Cthulu Mythos. Definitely a fun watch.
Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
I suppose I should try and keep up with new anime at some point...but not right now. I'm currently watching Higurashi and, while shopping today, I came across some excellent prices on anime along with a strangely secret "buy 1 get 1 half off" sale that I only found out about after I paid. So I've now got a whole lot of One Piece, and all of Romeo x Juliet and Pumpkin Scissors to watch.
Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
You know, I always find watching anime weekly to be much easier than working through my backlog. It's the only way I can watch through five series at once.
Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
I can see that. And I do watch some stuff weekly (generally whatever interesting anime Cartoon Network is playing). But I mostly watch anime (or other TV shows, for that matter) while eating or working on various things on my laptop (like PV strips). And, since a lot of that stuff takes a while, I can usually watch several episodes at a time. That usually keeps my backlog low to non-existant (at least if you only count the shows I have, not all the ones I want to see but haven't bought or downloaded yet). The last few months have been an exception to that, mainly due to my getting distracted by a number of non-anime shows on Netflix.
The time when I watched the most anime was back at university. At one point my anime club had two main meetings a week, and we'd be going through three different series (at 2-3 episodes a week) at each one. That's on top of whatever I was watching on my own. Sigh... I miss anime club. I met some great people there and was introduced to a lot of awesome anime I never would seen otherwise (such as Yakitate Japan!). Not to mention the occasional Mystery Science Theater style commentary... It's so much harder to find groups like that once you're out of school...

Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
Since I joined the anime club at my school, I have been introduced to many new and...odd animes (Mameshiba anybody?). I've been planning to, and hopefully today I will get to, watching an anime called Tsuritama. From watching the first episode at my friend's birthday party, I've became somewhat interested in it. Also...I've noticed that the main characters all have similar personalities and looks to my main OCs (though somewhat switched around), right down to the bird that is treated like a human (Muffin, my puffin). It's...rather creepy.

Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
You guys are lucky for having anime clubs that try to explore new and obscure series. The ones around here are all filled with the mainstream and I'm the only one forcing other things...
Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
The way my club worked was that we didn't do much other than watch anime. Meetings lasted about three hours and we'd spend the time watching three episodes or so of three different series. When we finished those series, everyone in the club would bring in some anime, we'd watch an episode or two of each, and then vote on which ones to add to the line-up. It could have potentially gotten horribly mainstream but, fortunately, we always had some members (such as the first president) who would bring in some unusual but awesome shows. And since we actually watched a bit of everything before voting, it gave each show a fair chance. That also inspired a lot of members (myself included) to see out lesser known shows to bring in. For the most part, the system worked really well. We did watch some mainstream stuff from time to time (we did a lot of One Piece, some Eyeshield 21, and all of Yuyu Hakusho) but with three series going on a time (or six when we started meeting twice a week) there was always lots of variety.
Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
The anime of the season for me this far is "Jinrui wa Suitai ******", Jinrui or Jintai for short. It's an anime with incredibly dark humor and social commentary hidden behind the cute and colorful artwork.
Who knows, this may be anime of 2012 with these first episodes being fantastic already.
EDIT: Lol, multi-lingual censorship. The last word in the title is "Shimashta", but with an "i" before the "t".

Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
I'm doing my usual thing of not really keeping up on new shows but watching whatever DVD sets and unliscensed torrents I happen to pick up. I ended up watching a lot of stuff this vacation. I finally got caught up with Dr. Who and started Torchwood as well. Other than that it's been all anime.
There was Pumpkin Scissors, which is a retty good anime about a military group investigating government corruption and the like. Though it only covers the first part so many manga volumes so there's a lot of unanswered questions at the end.
Then I watched all of Romeo x Juliet. I'm not entirely happy with the ending, but the art and music were great and I enjoyed the story. Much better than the original play in my opinion.
The first season of Tower of Druaga was enjoyable (and absolutely hillarious at times), but ended on a huge cliff hanger (I need to get season 2).
What else... Oh yeah, all the Higurashi anime except for the newest OAV set. It was pretty good but I felt that they rushed the first couple of arcs too much. The visual novels are better, for sure. There was also three or four seasons of One Piece in there (through the end of Alabasta).
At the moment, I'm catching up on the new Toonami shows that I DVR'd while in Hawaii. Cashern Sins is rather depressing so far (only three or four episodes in though). Deadman Wonderland is pretty dark and twisted but it's doing a good job of keeping me interested (I'm up to date with it).

Re: Stuff I've Watched Recently
I thought Higurashi's anime was okay. They screwed up at the start, but fixed things with the second season.
Don't bother with the Umineko anime though. The only thing that made it worth it was OH DESIRE!
As for the Toonami anime...
I felt like Deadman's been on a downward spiral for a while now. I guess it's pacing issues. Casshern has continued to depress me every episode. I still love it though for how cinematic it feels.
