Election '08
Re: Election '08
Also, the "states" up here are called provinces. Except for the northern ones, they're territories.

Sigh... On the one hand, it's kinda nice to see that racism has dropped to the point where a black man can win the presidential election. Maybe that'll finally shut up all the people who scream racism at the drop of a hat. On the other hand, I'm seriously worried about Obama's plans for taxes, the economy, health care, government spending, government power, national defense, and foreign policy. In other words, pretty much everything important... Maybe I'll be surprised and he'll go a good job...I doubt it, but you never know. I think there's a much better chance he'll screw things up so badly that they'll be fixing all the problems for years to come. Or, maybe he won't do much of anything and will just be a so-so president. Which might not be so bad considering.
Re: Election '08
I agree with Shadowman, it's probably going to take more than one term to fix the economy, given the state our current president has left it in. I wouldn't go so far as to say were doomed. No matter which candidate had won, there would still be a tough road ahead. There still is a chance we can revive the country, it's just going to take a while and a lot of work.

Re: Election '08
Like I said in the Saying Hi thread, it was the banks that really screwed up the economy with all the risky loans they gave out. Bush didn't really have anything to do with it. As for fixing it... Hopefully the baillout will help, though from what I've heard a lot of financial institutions applied for baillout money specifically so they could use it to pay big bonuses to their executives.

I'm no business bigshot but...yeah...I think you should have invested in the economy...not banks...and those who looted the fund just to pay their execs deserve a life-sentence as well as a multi-million fine.

Sorry, Josiah. I didn't mean to blame it all on Bush. I had forgotten about all those mortgages and bank problems. We'd just had a long discussion about it in history too.

Re: Election '08
Well, I'll be happy if Obama changes affermative action so that it applies to people of limited income rather on race. As in, there shall be no discrimination nor favoritism to anyone of any race. I may be half mexican, but apparently to the government, I'm hispanic. I don't want a free ride.

Logics? This is war!
Give the guy a chance. He's proven himself the smartest man on earth by outsmarting a political system that is now so convoluted that even the founders don't understand the whys.
Maybe he has a brain after all.

Re: Election '08
Coming in a bit late here, but I wanted Obama to win. Before McCain choose Palin, I wanted him to win. Palin does not have enough experiance, being the governor of Alaska, winning with that many votes and assuming office in 2006! Arnold Schwarzenegger would be a better choice even! McCain made a stupid mistake - if he choose someone else, he would've won.
Re: Election '08
Let me disect this, if you will.
First of all, She still has a great deal more experience than Obama. Being governer of a state, even if it is Alaska, is still gives her executive experience. She knows what she can and can't do as vice president and President(assuming McCain won and the unlikely even that he would keel over).Cheezdude wrote:Palin does not have enough experiance, being the governor of Alaska, winning with that many votes and assuming office in 2006!
Now, I don't doubt that you don't know this already, but if you don't, then you need to read the U.S. Constitution on this. It says that to be the President(and possibly the vice president) of The United States, one must be: 35 years or older(check), lived in the U.S. for 14 years(check), and be a natural born U.S. Citizen. That last one is the big one right there. Arnold was not a natural born citizen, so that means he isn't able to run for President and quite possibly the Vice President. Now, if he was a natural born citizen, then yes, he would be a little better than Palin. Too bad he's Austrian.Cheezdude wrote:Arnold Schwarzenegger would be a better choice even!
Now, some people may have been turned away by how she speaks, but that's not a very good reason not to like her. After all, Gorge W. Bush speaks funny, and he was a fine president. You just think otherwise because all you hear about him are the bad stuff. Though I do think SNL did hurt McCain's chance of winning.Cheezdude wrote:McCain made a stupid mistake - if he choose someone else, he would've won.

I am not happy to hear that some of the banks that have cost many people a ton of money (including me
) are still trying to do scams. That is not cool.

Personally, I never quite understood what so many people disliked about Palin. She seemed ok from what I know of her.
I lost some money thanks to the whole economy crash too. Most of my savings is in bonds or cash, so that's fine, but I had some stock in Fannie May and Freddie Mac (both big financial companies that, until a couple months ago, everyone was positive were in great shape) which took a gigantic nose dive.

I didn't know about the constitution thing being Canadian and all.
SNL improved his chances - so many more people would've watched SNL than Obama's speeches. Way more publicity from that that Obama got.
