Pineapple Breeze

Every day I had you on my mind;
When distracted, you inhabited the furthest regions of my brain;
But most often you were the first thing I’d be thinking of.

You were my first priority, over myself;
Over my future, over others I cared for.
You were my blatant desire,
Someone and something I would never have wanted to lose.

You were my treasure;
My treasure, and I treated you thus,
and rightly so;
My treasure, and I did treasure you.

You were a rarity. A common person,
But a rarity. A gem among stones,
to me, and I cherished you thus,
and rightly so.

And in this pineapple breeze,
I remember you.
I remember the experiences,
the thoughts and the pining.

And oh, how I’d miss you.
On a lonely day, you’d be on my mind,
I’d remember your caresses and sweet words.
Your assurances and I’d let nothing else intrude
But your hands and the feel of you.

And now in this pineapple breeze,
Your smiles and your laughter travel back to me;
I remember your scent and your taste,
Lifting from my lips, reluctantly.

I would see you from time to time,
No longer frequently but enough.
And you’d tell me to be patient;
“Everything will be fine.”
I listened to you and I waited.
I waited.

And with this pineapple breeze
comes regrets and forgotten promises.
Oh how I loved you, how I cared;
What I’ve ever taken from you,
I’ve kept to this very day;

and I smile and close my eyes
and admire this pineapple breeze.
