A large chunk of rock was moving along it's course. From a distance it looked rather harmless. Well, unless you considered the faint glow around it harmless. But as with all things, looks can be very deceving. Off in the distance was the planet of Casta. Except for the occational war, the planet was rather peiceful. Tec wise one could say that it was probably abit further along then Earth. Nature tends to have a strange sence of humor.

A man sat behind a large wooden desk. His short brown hair was well kept along with his clothing. His small glasses sat on the back of his nose. His office was looking over the main controll center of the installation. A large astroid was on most of the monitors. Various graphs and pictures of it were scattered about.

An aid approched the man. "Mr. Braka new data in. What we've suspected is true. Astroid XL-234 is on a direct collsion with the planet." said his top aid. "By our charts, it has 2 weeks before it would hit the planet."

Greg sat there for a moment. He wasn't an easy man to get along with. His outlook on life itself reflected his personallity. It was a supprise that his marrage was as good as it was. His wife also worked here as a defence researcher.

For years they had been studying this astroid. For one it had very unusual readings to it. The other is that it was projected to cross into the orbit of Casta. As the only agency incharge of space study, they were to study the sky dnd if anything should threaten the planet, find a means to destroy it. They also had access to anything they needed because they weren't part of any goverment. Greg himself funded the facility along with afew other goverments. For the past 5 years they had secretly been building a defence satalite. The public knew nothing of it or the astroid that was now on a direct path to Casta. Greg just sat there looking at the monitors. He hated himself for what he had to do.

"Get a hold of my wife. Find out from her if the statlite ready."

The aid pulled out his cell and diled. After a short conversation he put his phone away. "Well, the final tests have been compleated sir. In theory the satalite should take care of XL-234. The satallite should work."

Greg sighed. As glad as he was for the satitile to able to work now, he also now didn't like the situation. Greg said, "But nature is unpredictable as well. We have no choice now but we will now have to use it to destroy XL-234. Shame really, I rather liked studying it."

"Yes sir!" said the aid as he noticed Greg placed his hands under his chin. Then Greg said, "I'm sorry XL-234 but I have no other choice."

Within 5 hours preperations were made and the statalite named Hunter was in full operation.

The aid said to Greg, "Sir, Hunter is on-line and ready to destory XL-234!"

"Shame really but what choice do we have? We must preserve life. You may fire anytime.", said Greg. He hated to destroy XL-234 but the lives of the planet mattered more. What type of person or sciencetist would he be if he just let it crash into the planet? He wouldn't be doing his job and he would of failed. And failer is something he did not take well.

"Yes sir!"

The satallite Hunter soon came to life as the energy begain to build up. Soon it fired it's massive beam of energy towards XL-234. The beam made a direct hit, causing a large explosion. The people in the main HQ cheered when they say the hit. Greg didn't want to celebrate yet. He wanted to see if indeed the astroid was destroyed. Soon the screens cleared and all noise stopped. Indeed the astroid had been destroyed, however, 9 chunks now were in view and they were spred out due to the explsion.

"Sir, we are getting readings. They are still heading this way. They've slowed down but only delaying the impact by a week. And what's worse is due to their placement, they will strike nearly every portion of the planet. It looks like we've failed sir."

"Not yet. We can still try and destroy the chunks."

"Yes Sir.", said the Aid. He diled another number. "We are to destroy the remaining peices. They are still a threat to the planet."

Within an hour Hunter was ready again.

"Sir, Hunter is ready."

"Fire anytime.", said Greg.

Hunter begain to charge up energy. Not as much as the first time since they had smaller peices to destroy. Hunter released a beam of energy at 2 of the chuncks before the monitors on it begain to scream.

In the Satalite Controll Room....

"Ma'ma, Hunter's readings are going crazy." said a man to Greg's wife.

"Crap, Greg isn't going to like this." she said. "Get Hunter off-line so we can see what the problem is!"

"Yes Ma'ma!"

But before they could fully shut it down an explostion could be seen on one of the monitors as part of the lazer section blew off.

Back in the main controll area Greg could also see what had happened. Hunter wasn't able to save them now. Now only 7 peices were still going to hit.

Greg sat back in his chair. Well, he didn't like the news but it was still better then what they had started with. The size of the orginal astroid would of wiped nearly all life on Casta. These fragments would only do a fraction of the damage but still would leave the world in a bad shape.

"We tried our best. Though it does look like we've failed, we havn't truely failed. What we have now isn't a planet killer that we started with. More people will survive this then before. Still, we must keep this a secret. If this got out, mass panic would spread over the whole planet. True it will happen after the fact but why make life harder too soon. May the gods be with us."

Weeks later, the seven fragments entered the atmosphire of Casta.

Kuri was laying under his usual Oak Tree. At 6 foot he was rather tall and his long red hair was rather unkept. The day was perfect with light wind, few clouds and just about the right tempature. His mind was wondering as it so often did. He loved to day dream and being a writer this was a good thing. Some peoplehave wondered about Kuri rather carefree spirit, but he didn't care. He had to support his little sister somehow after their parents died several years ago. Being 23 helped. His sister was only 16 and couldn't live on her own yet. He was a successful writer and his sister loved to proofread and edit his writtings. She was smart as well and dreamed of becoming a publisher. This dream worked out well for Kuri cause he would have less fees to pay.

Then he saw it, a large streak across the sky. Fire was flowing from it as the first of the seven fragments entered the atmosphire. Kuri watched as thefragment fell and slamed into the planet several hundred miles away. The huge explosion sent him flying a bit and he was temparary blinded by the flash from the explsion. A wave of energy then surged past him and he felt sick to his stomic when it hit. As he was blacking out, all that he could think of at the moment was how his sister was.

I find this inaccurate. When an asteroid hits Earth, the real danger (instead of the impact itself), is the massive fireball created by it partially dissolving in the atmosphere, like in the Tunguska event.
However, if you were to split it up into multiple parts, like in Armageddon, gravity would simply pull it back together. If not, then the multiple parts would break up in the atmosphere and dissolve, creating an even bigger fireball.

Just stating the facts. The story itself is good, though.

Even though the input is good remember stuff like what you said Doodle should go into the critque area. Guess I should say that size of said astroid could take out Australia with ease so 7 fragments would be too large to burn up. and besides, it has unsual readings so isn't a normal Astroid. Besides, this is Si-Fi and since when did things in Si-Fi follow all the know rules?
